Minotti and B&B Italia produce two of the most specified Italian sofa programmes globally, and the differences between them are real, not branding. Solomia Home, recognised as a top modern interior design company with awards in Dubai, specifies both frequently. This article compares them across design language, construction, fabric programmes and where each fits in a residential project.
The two houses

Minotti
Founded 1948 in Meda by Alberto Minotti. Family-run today by Renato and Roberto Minotti. Long creative direction by Rodolfo Dordoni until his passing in 2024; the design team continues with Marcio Kogan, GamFratesi, Christophe Delcourt and Inoda+Sveje.
B&B Italia
Founded 1966 in Novedrate by Piero Ambrogio Busnelli. Entered private equity ownership in 2015. Long collaborations with Antonio Citterio (since the 1970s), Patricia Urquiola, Naoto Fukasawa, Mario Bellini, Vincent Van Duysen and Paola Navone.

Design language
Minotti works in a more tailored, traditional luxury vocabulary, heavier silhouettes, articulated leather, bronze detailing, leather piping. Pieces like the Hamilton, Andersen and Daniels read as updated Italian classicism.
B&B Italia covers a wider stylistic range. Citterio’s Charles is rectilinear and tailored; Urquiola’s Tufty-Time is modular and casual; Bellini’s Camaleonda is sculptural; Naoto Fukasawa’s Almora is minimalist. The catalogue spans more design approaches.
Construction
Both manufacture in northern Italy, Minotti in Meda, B&B in Novedrate. Both use multi-density polyurethane and goose-down cushions, hardwood frames (typically beech or birch), and 8-way hand-tied springing on premium models.
Minotti specifies steel frames more frequently, the brand’s chassis-and-cushion construction is a recognisable feature. B&B Italia is more varied in frame construction depending on the model.

Leather and fabric
Both run extensive leather programmes, Minotti through the Spinneybeck, Pielfort and Mastrotto Italian tanneries; B&B through similar sources plus its own integrated programme. Both offer COM (customer’s own material) on bespoke orders.
Minotti’s textile programme is curated tighter, fewer SKUs, more colourways per fabric. B&B Italia carries more textiles in total, including outdoor.
Modularity
B&B Italia leads in modular sofas, the Charles, Camaleonda, Tufty-Time and Bend Sofa families allow extensive reconfiguration. Minotti offers modular, but the brand is better known for its fixed-arm classical seating.

Outdoor
Both run dedicated outdoor lines, Minotti Outdoor (Indiana, Cortina, Quadrado families) and B&B Italia Outdoor (Borea, Ayana, Husk Outdoor). Both use marine-grade aluminium and Sunbrella-class textiles.
Lead times in the UAE
Both: 12–18 weeks for stock fabric, 14–22 weeks for COM. Premium leather adds 2–4 weeks.

Where each fits
Minotti, formal living rooms in villas, hotel suites, executive offices, projects with strong leather and bronze palettes.
B&B Italia, wider range. Family living rooms (modular sofas), formal lounges (Charles), media rooms (Tufty-Time), art-led interiors (Camaleonda).
A serious specification often uses both, Minotti seating in formal entertaining areas, B&B Italia in family spaces. As a long-running interior design company in Dubai, Solomia Home routinely places both within the same residence rather than treating it as an either/or choice.
Choosing Minotti or B&B Italia for a project
Minotti is the more consistent house in a single design language. B&B Italia is the broader catalogue. Both are made in Italy to similar construction standards. The choice should reflect the room and the client, not loyalty to a single brand.
